Okocha who signed for Onduparaka in 2017 from regional league outfits Nebbi Central has been a hot cake and a huge transfer target for many top clubs in the country but finally decided to continue with his stay at home, something which he attributes to the love the fans have shown him over the years.

I did this to pay back the fans who have trusted me over these years; they have supported me on and off the pitch and I feel I can still do much more for them as a Caterpillar. I am also impressed with the new system the club is trying to adopt and I am really hoping that all this isn’t in vain.

Asked whether it was an easy or hard decision, the former winger turned defender noted that…

It was a hard decision for me to make, obviously I had offers from different clubs, at one point I had even made up my mind to extend and I contacted the CEO but then another offer came on board and I had to re-think (laughs). But in the end, my decision came down to weighing my love for this club, and the love of the fans for me, I think I would not get this kind of love elsewhere if I left right now.

Okocha’s contract extension comes at a time when the future of old players at the club holds a big uncertainty among the fans given the huge number of new players signed but the club CEO Edison Shaban, allays such uncertainties by revealing that very many old players are still with the team.

We still have players that were here with us last season, most of them are still contracted and we believe by having a huge squad we can improve the depth and balance in the team. As a club, we aim to have a squad that will have all aspects of the game ranging from experience, talent, zeal and above all Passion for the Onduparaka badge.

Shaban Noted.
